Y axis stepper delay

I have been working on my kit sins i got it. And now i have assembled it and attached the electronics and ran into a problem with the Y axis. I use Ramps 1.4 as my controller for the machine instead of GRBL. The machine is a 1200x1000 configuration with Nema 23, 57BYGH218 on all axis's

I have done a couple of things so far. I have checked that it is square on just about everything. I have also checked the DRV8825 pot's that they have enouph on the current limiters.

This is what im using in term of electronics.

Taurino MEGA Rev 3 board
Premium Ramps 1.4

I run this with 24V sins both these boards support it and i think it makes the steppers work a little better in term of heat and other things. I also intend to use Magnetic Hall-O endstops but that is beside the point to my problem.

I use 2 seperate Steppers for the dual Y axis basecly Y and E1 and turned the support function on in Marlin. The Marlin version im using is 1.1.0-RC3

X and Z works like a charm no problems what so ever.

My Dual Y setup works just not in sync. It looks like one of the 2 steppers for the Y axis is a little behind. It does the steps just not at the same time as the other stepper. I have been searching for info on people that have had simular problems and dont seam to find any out there. So i thought why not ask and see if someone have any idea what more i can look into to figure it out.

Step example

1. i do a 10mm manual step on the Y axis
2. The right stepper on the right side of the Y assembly starts doing what it is supposed to and goes 10mm

In the middle of Step 2 ... Step 3 is executed

3. The left stepper on the left side of the Y assembly starts doing what it is supposed to and goes 10mm

It looks like a wobble effect on the Gantry from right to left.

Anyway if you guys have any good ideas or advice i would gladly try them out :)

Best Regards

Re: Y axis stepper delay

Did a test by doing a parallell connection over the 2 steppers. Turns out that then it works. Would be good to find out why it dont work as it should with a standalone stepper driver.

Re: Y axis stepper delay

Hello Marlak,

Your problem could be in configuring Marlin. My question is: why did not put both Y motors in serial conection? The current will not be twice and using 24V ,you will have plenty of power. Can you put here the portion of configuration where you set-up Y and E1 as dual Y?

Re: Y axis stepper delay

Aint more then 2 switches for it one to enable and one to revert the Y2 direction in the Configuration_adv.h file.

Shure i could serialize the two it aint a biggy i just did the parallel to test it out so i didnt have any wire dmg and such.

Re: Y axis stepper delay

I just had an idea.. Could it be cable length on the 2 steppers that cause it. Basecly the resistance and impedance is different between them.

Re: Y axis stepper delay

I just finished a Shapeoko (1200mmx800mm). Y motors are mounted with separate drivers. Both drivers have same commands (STEP and DIR)-hardware conected. I do not see any delay, the motors (Nema23) are moving in the same time.

Re: Y axis stepper delay

Nice :) i havent tried at it again sins i have had other things to work on the machine. Atm im testing out the Toshiba Flashair W-03 SD card with buildt in WIFI. A very nice solution. I do have problems with it thow.
